Clearly a goldmine for Apple. In the past 3 years, I've had one break near the magnetic end and one near the wall plug end. A third just mysteriously quit working, though it looks brand new. I am very careful with these cords, but it makes no difference.

You can buy a 40 watt or 60 watt magsafe adaptor (sufficient for powering a 13' MacBook Pro) for around $20 at Amazon. You will need an 85 watt adaptor to power a 15' or 17' MacBook Pro and the adaptors cost around $83 from Apple, which I think includes tax. However, some Apple local Genius stores will give you a discount and sell you an 85 watt adaptor for around $61. A protective shield that could be placed around the cable would be great if someone knows where one can be found. So I'm having the same problem as thousands of others.

Wireless xbox 360 controller setup. The longer I've had my computer, the shorter the life-spans have been for the replacement chargers. This last one only lasted 6 months, if that.

I lived in the US ten years ago and plugged my UK purchased Toshiba laptop into the mains using an ordinary travel adaptor that you get in an airport etc and it worked fine.
